Living in and around Newport
|
Why Newport? Once the summer playground to only America's wealthiest now it can be yours. Presidents to pirates have called Newport home and the same diversity of appeal still exists. As evident in the architecture, within a ten minute stroll you can pass some of America's premier collections of historic homes ranging from the gilded opulence of the mansions to the stark utilitarianism of colonial homes.
The coast itself which cradles Newport, offers a variety of opportunity; from the violent rocky cliffs, with their hidden private coves and beaches, to the long stretches of fine white sand. The bustling harbor offers its own share of diversity as you can watch a couple of kids in a makeshift dingy sail past one of the many mega yachts enjoying Newport’s summer thanks to the harbor depth.
It if is night life you crave, you can find excellent music and not just during our world famous Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festivals. Year round there is a variety of talent kicking up the many stages in town. As you walk along Thames Street you will pass quaint shops, fabulous restaurants and a diverse night life. Bellevue Avenue enjoys being home to most of the lavish “Summer Cottages” and a more sophisticated shopping experience as well as Capitol Realty which can be found at 123 Bellevue.
Both the history buffs and art patrons will find a wealth of opportunities to explore. As has always been the case, a large community of successful artists has chosen to call Newport home resulting in a good number of local galleries and a very impressive Newport Art Museum. Thanks to the foresight of many, Newport, so richly steeped in history, has done a wonderful job of preserving treasures from the past. One only needs to walk the neighborhoods and see the flawlessly restored homes to begin to understand what life may have been like in another time.
For the sports enthusiasts Newport offers a world class experience in Tennis, home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Sailing ( we needn’t add anything here), Golf, home to the first US Amateur, first US Open and 2006 Women’s Open, and Polo, you will find the only forum in the world primarily dedicated to international Polo competition. You can also discover opportunities to engage in virtually any sport you are looking for.
Peace and tranquility are never far away either. Consider returning home to hear nothing but the soft lap of the ocean waves after a quiet dinner beside a roaring fire at the country’s oldest operating tavern or meandering through the stalls of Redwood Library, where you can peruse books from the 15th century.
Newport is indeed a most special place, within its eleven miles and vast resources you can find or create virtually any lifestyle you choose. Throughout the ages Newport has held a special place in history…we would like to help you become part of this history. What’s the Point? Thanks to the vision and support of Doris Duke the Point Section, being home to many of Newport’s oldest residences, is more than a charming place to explore it is a view back in time. As you walk along the streets that open to the harbor it isn’t hard to imagine life 200 year ago. These perfectly restored homes were once filled with the boat builders, craftsmen, sea captains, merchants, and fishermen that nourished the sea trade in Newport.
Today the Point is a highly sought after place to live, like its secret gardens the Point holds a bit of mystery nestled in between the harbor, America’s Cup Avenue and the action of downtown. The neighborhood enjoys a respected quiet yet it is steps to excellent restaurants and shops.
High on the Hill! Historic Hill is home to some of Newport’s most historic institutions; The Redwood Library, The Newport Art Museum, Touro Synagogue, Trinity and St. Mary’s Churches, the Newport Casino and The Newport Reading Room. You will find a great variety of architecture styles represented on the streets of Historic Hill.
Located close to some of the best restaurants and nightlife, Historic Hill is a neighborhood for those that enjoy the best of both worlds- close to the action but not in it.
Return to Broadway! Boasting Newport’s new “Restaurant Row” and part of the newly coined “Theater District” Broadway is seeing its comeback. For far too long Broadway, the gateway to Newport’s finest was the lackluster star of a far bygone time. Well thanks to some creative visionaries she has woken up, dusted herself off and put on some funk, now sporting a plethora of great restaurants and night spots.
Thank you Tuckers and Salvation!
Driven to the Drive. Where can one find a more breathtaking view than from Newport’s Ocean Drive? Ocean Drive is home to beautiful estates, private and public beaches and the historical Fort Adams. Treat your family to a day in the sun out at Breton Point. From flying kites and enjoying a picnic to lying in the sun or exploring the rocky shoreline the day is destined to be enjoyable with the Del’s lemonade truck never far.
A peaceful bike ride or drive along the shoreline will be the perfect ending to any day while the sunsets over sweeping views of the Atlantic. Or enjoy a cool drink at Castle Hill and gaze out across the Narragansett Bay you will bear witness as the sky turns to hues of pink and orange and the sun dips into the ocean, while the waves crash against the rocks below and the smell of the salt water drifts up to your nose.
Fifth Ward…Yachting Village…Downtown: The beginning, middle and end of the high paced action in Newport. The heart of the city is as diverse as the city itself. The calm ocean views offered at the end of each wharf are contrasted against the busy shops and restaurants that line the streets. Whatever the food you crave you can find it downtown, but don’t forget to try some New England clam chowder. With all of the shops you are destined to find the perfect souvenir of Newport- and more! As the sun goes down and the lights come up you will experience as much variety in your options. You can embark on a nice walk to one of the many ice cream shops, enjoy a quiet dinner for two complete with live music or grab your friends and take advantage of the eclectic selection of bars.
Steps away from the center of action you will find a quiet and strong community. Your family will enjoy a picnic at Morton Park with a volleyball court and playground, and the street over are basketball and tennis courts for everyone to enjoy. Walk down to King’s Park to enjoy the fireworks on the Fourth of July and capture the spirit of Newport. You can always find a new adventure in downtown Newport!
